DIY Hair Mask Recipe

Sometimes keeping my hair looking healthy and shiny feels like a full-time job. I only use the best organic shampoos and conditioners, to make sure I’m not exposing my hair and skin to drying detergents and harsh chemicals. I also rinse my hair in cool water, which helps seal hair cuticles and lock in that all important moisture. It certainly wakes me up in the morning!

But whenever my hair is feeling a bit meh, I love mixing up my own natural hair masks to give it a health kick which really shows. Try it out to get smoother, happier hair.

Exposure to heat, styling products, and chemical treatments can leave your hair feeling weak, dry and damaged. Avocado is packed with vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and using it in a hair mask means you can target strands from root to tip.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant which can help repair any damage to your scalp and stimulate new hair growth. Massaging avocado on your scalp can also unclog blocked pores to improve your skin’s health and nourish hair cells.

You might find the idea of putting banana in your hair a bit strange. But trust me, it can work wonders to smooth and condition your strands, and can help prevent hair loss.

Bananas contain natural oils, potassium, Vitamins A, B6, C, E, and folate, which all work together to soften your hair and protect its natural elasticity. This means your hair is stronger and more pliable, and able to withstand stress from brushing and styling without breaking.

Coconut Milk
Many people use coconut oil in their hair, but coconut milk is a lesser known natural ingredient that has excellent moisturizing properties and acts as a natural detangler. It nourishes hair with vitamins, iron, selenium, calcium, magnesium and healthy fats, making it feel soft and smooth.

Coconut milk also as natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. It is easily absorbed by your scalp, and can help clear up dandruff and other slight skin infections.

Coconut Oil
Applying coconut oil on your strands can help keep them strong, healthy and shiny. It is one of the best multitasking natural hair care products, and can help nourish your scalp to improve its health and stimulate hair growth.

Coconut oil infuses hair with lauric acid, vitamins and minerals, and also helps reduce protein loss so your hair can retain its moisture. It also helps protect against damage from styling and chemical processes.

Olive Oil
Don’t be afraid of making your hair greasy by adding a touch of olive oil to your hair mask. It can help smooth brittle ends and reduce frizz, as well as making your hair more pliable and resilient to damage.

It has rich moisturizing properties and contains oleic acid, Vitamins A, E, and antioxidants to help remove a buildup of sebum, promote new hair follicles and stimulate growth.

- 1/2 Avocado
- 1/2 Banana
- 50 ml Coconut Milk
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil

Put all the ingredients in a blender, and mix until you have a very smooth paste. It’s best to avoid leaving any lumps, as this can make it harder to rinse out later.

Apply the mixture all over your hair making sure your scalp is saturated, and work your way down to the tips of your strands. Massage your scalp for a few minutes to improve blood circulation, and let your skin absorb all the healthy nutrients.

Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. You can leave it on for longer if you like, but don’t let the mixture dry completely. You can use a shower cap to avoid dripping onto your clothes.

Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo to avoid stripping away any moisture you’ve just gained, and condition your hair as usual.

You should already feel how much easier it is to work through any knots, and once it’s dry, your hair should feel healthy, shiny and full of bounce.
